A giant of American art, Richard Serra died this week at the age of 85. I was overwhelmed when I first experienced the artist’s eight-sculpture installation, "The Matter of Time", at the Guggenheim Bilboa. I vividly remember walking through the undulating corridors and feeling dwarfed by the monumental slabs of corten steel. Serra's acute instinct for creating remarkable spatial encounters is unmatched.While studying English Literature at Yale, Serra supported himself by working in steel mills where he got to know the material that would later define his career.Serra’s early sculptures were abstract, process-based, and made of non-traditional material such as fiberglass, rubber, and molten lead. In 1969, he pioneered a process of cutting and stacking materials to create large structures that could balance on their own. The artist will also be remembered for his drawings, prints and his performance and video art.
